The Lower Austrians donate a lot, but in general it is said: 40 percent more blood is needed to get through the summer safely. In 2021, almost 75,000 blood bags came from Lower Austria. That’s good, but there have been more.
More than 70,000 blood bags are collected from voluntary donors in Lower Austria every year. This number has remained stable over the past ten years and even improved to almost 75,000 last year. But: In 2010, there were still 84,000, twenty years earlier 87,000 blood bags. In between were strong years like 2000 or 2005 with nearly 96,000 each. The country’s clinics currently require 35,000 transfusions.
40 percent more blood supply desired
Due to the many operations in Vienna and elsewhere, there is still a major complaint in Austria about the often life-saving elixir. Because every 90 seconds a donation is needed, which amounts to almost 1000 canned goods per day. Lower Austria, with about 3.5 percent regular donors, is pretty much in line with the national average. That’s clearly not enough, not just because a unit of blood only lasts 42 days.
For operations and deliveries
“The blood is especially needed for operations after accidents or during births,” said State Commissioner Stephan Pernkopf on World Blood Donor Day on June 14. Incidentally, the donor strongholds in Lower Austria are located in the Waldviertel: more than 15 percent are located in Bad Traunstein (Zwettl district), Waldenstein (Gmünd), Pernegg (Horn), Vitis (Waidhofen an der Thaya) and Japons (Horn).
