Following a series of arsons on the French rail network, Transport Minister Patrice Vergriete said on Saturday that he expected express trains to run on schedule again at the start of the new week.
“We expect a complete normalization by Monday,” Vergriete told the press on Saturday. Since Saturday, the high-speed trains (TGV) on the routes from Paris to the east have been running according to schedule again.
Athlete transportation is guaranteed
On the routes to the west, southwest and to Brittany, there are delays and individual train cancellations, rail operator SNCF reports this morning. “At the moment, traffic on the northern axis remains disrupted on Sunday and should improve on the Atlantic axis over the weekend.” The transport of the teams to the Olympic Games will be guaranteed.
Fires on routes
On Friday night, hours before the official opening of the Olympic Games in Paris, unknown persons set fire to facilities on several TGV lines. Key connections were damaged, there were delays and train cancellations. More than 800,000 passengers were affected as the holiday season begins in France. The disruptions also affected the Eurostar, which connects London to the continent under the English Channel.
So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attacks. The investigation into the acts of sabotage is still ongoing.
