Following the attacks on the French railway network, investigators are now pursuing a new lead: a group critical of the Olympic Games has claimed responsibility for the attacks on the French high-speed train network in a strange letter.
According to a report in the newspaper Le Parisien, the attacks on the French railway network could have a radical left and anti-Olympic background. It is said that an unusual confession letter with connections to ultra-left has been sent to several French and international media.
“Do you call it a festival? We see it as a celebration of nationalism, a gigantic staging of the subjugation of the population by the states,” the newspaper quotes.
Investigators are now investigating whether this is a genuine letter of responsibility – as is suspected – or whether it is a copycat falsely claiming responsibility for the attacks.
Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin reported on Saturday the progress of the investigation: “We have discovered a number of elements that make us think that we will soon know who is responsible.”
Fires on routes
Friday evening – just hours before the official opening of the Olympic Games in Paris – unknown persons set fire to facilities on several TGV lines. Important connections were damaged, there were delays and train cancellations. More than 800,000 passengers were affected. The Public Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into damage to state interests.
