At least two people have been killed and about 140 others injured in a train crash in southern Russia. According to Tass, the passenger train collided with a truck.
The accident occurred near the railway station in Kotelnikovo. The responsible ministry said the train was travelling from Kazan to the Black Sea resort of Adler. Unverified videos have been circulated on the Telegram platform showing at least four derailed train cars. People climbed out of the side of one train car.
The number of victims may still rise
Initially, there were reports of two deaths, but the number of victims could rise. According to initial information, around 140 people were injured, 16 of whom had to be treated in hospitals. In total, there were around 800 passengers on the train at the time of the accident.
Russian railway company RZD said eight wagons left the track after colliding with a truck. The truck driver was trying to cross a railway crossing.
The railway is considered one of the most important and reliable means of transport in Russia and accidents are generally rare. However, in recent years there have been repeated acts of sabotage on railway lines by opponents of the war against Ukraine.
