One can only imagine the fear of death that a 61-year-old climber in Germany had to endure this weekend. In any case, it was a last-minute rescue when the completely exhausted man, who had climbed a rock face in Upper Bavaria and could no longer go up or down, was saved by the mountain rescue team on Saturday.
The 61-year-old set off from Ruhpolding on Friday for a hike up the 1,961-meter-high Sonntagshorn. The man from the Rosenheim district had chosen a challenging route with several via ferratas. “At an altitude of around 1,750 meters, the man went off the path and could no longer climb independently,” says the Ruhpolding mountain rescue service.
With no cell phone reception and no other climbers passing by on Friday, the lost climber had to stay on the rock face all night. It wasn’t until Saturday morning that another hiker heard the man’s desperate cries for help and immediately called 911.
Completely exhausted and dehydrated, but otherwise unharmed
A mountain rescue team immediately went to the victim, first secured him with a rope and brought him to safety in a helicopter. The rescue took place at the very last moment, because the completely exhausted and dehydrated 61-year-old had already slipped several times a bit further and no longer had a safe hold on the brittle and loose rocks.
The man’s many guardian angels did a good job, because apart from the lack of fluids and fatigue, the 61-year-old remained unharmed. To be on the safe side, he was taken to a hospital for a check-up.
