The required ban on stabbing weapons for all of Vienna and the rest of the country could have already been established. The “Krone” found out that the bill has been in force since April. A resolution has failed so far due to disagreement about whether the bill could also turn innocent people into “perpetrators”.
Mayor Michael Ludwig, Federal Police Director Michael Takacs and Vienna Police Chief Gerhard Pürstl recently campaigned more forcefully than ever for a weapons ban zone for the whole of Vienna during the major night-time operation against youth crime. Ludwig stressed to the “Krone” that he was in favor of “a general weapons ban for the entire city area”, which “must be consistently and completely monitored”, as was already the case successfully on the Praterstern.
He has been advocating this since 2019, “because no one can explain to me that someone should be walking around in the city and in public spaces with a machete or a gun.” More weapons did not mean more safety, but rather more insecurity. The highlight: the bill for this already exists, as the “Krone” has discovered.
