This is the German youth word of the year

Date:

The German Youth Word of the Year 2023 should mean something to everyone. It is “goofy” and, based on the popular Walt Disney character, describes a clumsy, foolish person or behavior.

In a vote by publisher Langenscheidt, ‘goofy’ came out on top with approximately 39 percent. The winning word was announced on Sunday at the 75th Frankfurt Book Fair.

“Side eye” and “NPC” follow in second and third place. ‘Side eye’ means a skeptical look at a person or situation, ‘NPC’ stands for ‘non-player character’, i.e. the term for someone who only passively observes what is happening around him.

Last year’s winning word was ‘smash’ and means something like ‘to start something’ or ‘to pick someone up’.

Freestyle since 2008
Langenscheidt has been publishing the youth word of the year since 2008 – at that time the “Gammelfleischparty” (party over 30) won. Last year’s winner was ‘cringe’: being ashamed of others. Discriminatory and offensive terms of any kind will be removed by the publisher.
