A man from the southern French town of La Palme is being investigated for negligent homicide after he left his two-year-old granddaughter in an overheated car and she died. Many regions of the country are currently under the highest heat alert level (see video above).
As the newspaper “Le Parisien” reports with reference to the fire brigade, the grandfather left the girl alone in his car after the child fell asleep while driving on Sunday afternoon. The grandfather therefore went to his apartment in the town of La Palme near Narbonne to take care of two other children. Later, when he went to check everything, he discovered that the girl was no longer breathing.
The man, who had worked as a volunteer firefighter for 40 years, tried to resuscitate the child until emergency services arrived, but doctors who had flown in by helicopter could only determine that the girl was dead.
Grandfather in police custody
An autopsy should now provide clarity on the cause of death. The grandfather and mother of the deceased have been questioned by the police. The grandfather was investigated for negligent homicide and he was taken into custody by the police. The temperature in the region was now 32 degrees Celsius.
