Swimmers in Rhode Island had an unusual experience: Thousands of dragonflies flew over Misquamicut Beach in the smallest U.S. state of Rhode Island on Saturday. People were scared and hid under blankets.
“I’ve never seen anything like this in my life,” said one beachgoer. In a video recording, the sky is partly black with dragonflies. It seems as if they are flying faster and faster. “Oh my God. That’s crazy,” said someone. Some people screamed.
Some hide under blankets. Other beachgoers remain completely calm, laughing and taking pictures of the swarm of dragonflies.
Here you can see the video recording.
After a few minutes it’s over
The incident lasted only a few minutes. How this could have happened is still unclear. Beach visitor Nicole Taylor described the experience as a ‘very strange experience, where more people would not have reacted in panic.
Don’t bite
Dragonflies do not usually sting or bite humans, as correctly noted on X. They feed primarily on insects such as mosquitoes and gnats. Some species breed in July and August, including the green dart fly, which is found in Rhode Island.
Rhode Island is part of the New England region and is the smallest state in the US. It takes its name from an island, its coastline is almost 500 miles long.
