Dead, wounded – Israeli army attacked Hezbollah near Beirut

Date:

The Israeli military said Tuesday it had carried out a targeted attack on a Hezbollah leader believed to be responsible for the shelling of the Golan Heights that killed 12 people over the weekend. An explosion was heard in a suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut (see video above).

According to initial reports, one civilian was killed and 68 others were wounded. Five of them were still in critical condition on Tuesday evening. According to the Lebanese security forces, the fate of the Hezbollah commander was initially unclear. Late in the evening it was reported that he had been “taken out.”

The commander is believed to be a close adviser to Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, one of the militia’s top military commanders. U.S. authorities are seeking the man, named Fuad Shukr, for his alleged involvement in a 1983 attack on U.S. troops in Beirut.

Neighbors reported a loud bang and a cloud of smoke. According to Lebanese sources, at least four buildings were damaged in the attack. People on the streets shouted “God bless Nasrallah” (Secretary General of Hezbollah, note) or “Netanyahu will pay the price for this.”

The Israeli military announced that its forces had carried out a targeted strike on the man “responsible for the murder of children in Majdal Shams and the murder of numerous other Israeli civilians. Majdal Shams is the name of the village where children and youth were murdered.” were hit by rockets during a soccer match this weekend.

Retaliatory attack expected
The Israeli and US governments have blamed Hezbollah for the Golan Heights attack, which in turn has denied it. Fears of an Israeli retaliatory strike have been rife in Beirut for days.

A civilian was killed in a rocket attack on northern Israel on Tuesday afternoon. “Hezbollah has crossed a red line,” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said again. There had been earlier rocket alerts in towns on the border with Lebanon. The Lebanese Foreign Minister announced that he would file a complaint with the United Nations. He does not want an escalation in his country.
