This is why rechargeable batteries and batteries are fire hazards

Date:

A small amount of damage to lithium-ion batteries – and the waste disposal plant is on fire. But improper disposal of batteries is not only a huge hazard at recycling facilities. If one ignites at home, it can lead to an explosion and destroy your own four walls.

More and more waste management companies are struggling with the consequences of improper battery disposal. In the past twelve years, fires at recycling plants have increased more than fivefold. Many facilities have been completely destroyed by devastating fires – a catastrophic development for waste and resource management.

Prof. Roland Pomberger, head of the chair for waste recycling technology and waste management, and Thomas Nigl, working group leader for future waste and waste management, from Montanuniversität Leoben, confirm and emphasize the “clear connection between the increasing number of lithium batteries in residual waste and fires in recycling plants”. “Lithium-ion batteries can ignite with the slightest damage and cause dangerous fires in garbage trucks, sorting or recycling plants. We are talking about up to six fires per day in one company!”

Last week, many Florianis fought fires in waste processing plants. A fire broke out in a waste paper department in Wörth near Pöchlarn in the Melk district. And in Wiener Neustadt, more than sixty emergency services responded to a major fire in a waste processing plant.

Improper handling also causes an increase in fires
The cause of the latter fire is being investigated by the police. It was said that a broken battery or a battery in the garbage bin, as well as sparks during shredding, were probably responsible for the flames. Headlines like last week’s are increasing. The reason for the fires is not only improper disposal, but also improper treatment. Experts clarify.
