After Southport attack – riot: Mosques increase security measures

Date:

Following the bloody knife attack on children at a dance event in the British city of Southport, right-wing radicals have again rioted. Local mosques have since increased their security measures.

In the north-east English city of Sunderland, some people attacked police officers at a mosque with stones and beer cans, the British news agency PA reports. A car was set on fire and a taxi was attacked. A well-known right-wing radical called for the demonstration.

“This is crime and chaos”
North East Mayor Kim McGuinness of the ruling Labour Party criticised the riots. “These are not protests. They are crime and mayhem. You do not speak for Sunderland,” she wrote on the X platform.

Protests against the Southport massacre have escalated again in Britain. In the north-east English city of Sunderland, some people attacked police officers at a mosque with stones and beer cans, the British news agency PA reports. A car was reportedly attacked. A well-known right-wing radical called for the demonstration.

False information about the attacker’s identity
Ultranationalists claim that authorities are concealing the true identity of the attacker who stabbed three girls and injured other children and two adults, some seriously, on Monday. Rumors spread on social media that the perpetrator was a Muslim asylum seeker. Police stress that the suspected 17-year-old was born in Britain. His parents are from Rwanda.

Right-wing demonstrations were also expected in other cities this weekend. In some cases, counter-protests were planned. Many mosques have tightened their security measures.

Riots had already taken place in several cities in recent days, including in the government district of London. In the British capital alone, more than 110 people were arrested. Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a tough response to rioters. He visited Southport again today and spoke to doctors at the Children’s Hospital, among other places.
