In the US, a robot dentist operated on a human for the first time. This was considerably faster than with a human doctor: the operation, including preparation, took only 15 minutes instead of two hours.
The patient in the US got a crown. The damaged tooth had to be ground down. This was done in one session. A human dentist usually needs two.
As the technology portal “Heise” reported, the treatment should also offer a number of other advantages. For example, instead of taking harmful X-rays, the robot makes a scan. With the help of the light beams, a precise 3D model of the teeth and the entire oral cavity is created, in which even the position of individual nerves is visible. According to the Boston company Perceptive, which made the robot, tooth decay can be detected with 90 percent certainty.
Artificial intelligence trained
Even if patients move more because they are afraid, for example, the robot should deliver accurate results. The company trained artificial intelligence (AI) for such situations. Chris Ciriello, dentist and founder of Perceptive, says the robot can also plan and perform operations independently. In the case of the American, he fixed the patient’s head and controlled the grinding device based on the scanned images.
Too many patients
Ciriello came up with the idea for the high-tech assistant because more patients were seeking help than he and his team could treat. The device will also be used in other therapies in the future. It has not yet been approved by the US health authority. Nevertheless, around $30 million has already been raised for the project.
It is also unclear whether the Perpective assistant will replace the human dentist. So far, it is controlled by humans and they are the ones who discuss with the patients what needs to be done.
