By 2027 – Government agrees to phase out Russian gas

Date:

The coalition has reached an agreement on the long-controversial energy chapter, with the ÖVP and the Greens committing to phase out Russian natural gas supplies by 2027.

Various media outlets such as the Ö1 “Mittagsjournal” reported this unanimously on Saturday. However, there is currently no strategy for this; it must first be developed. Negotiations have been ongoing for some time about the gradual phasing out of Russian natural gas supplies. In the current version of the security doctrine, Russia is still mentioned as a strategic partner.

After the Greens recently approved the appointment of Finance Minister Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) as the new EU commissioner, movement in the negotiations was expected. However, both government circles said on Saturday that the security strategy was still being finalized.

“In line with the European Council”
“In line with the decisions of the European Council, Austria wants to end its dependence on Russian energy imports in order to protect the economy and households from new price and supply risks,” a published article said. The European Commission has committed to a European phase-out of Russian natural gas supplies by 2027.

Households and the economy must be supported as best as possible during this change, the newspaper said. How this will be achieved remains to be seen.

FPÖ: There is a risk of price increases
The FPÖ sees a “political act of madness”. There is a risk of a further increase in the already extremely high energy prices, says energy and economy spokesman Axel Kassegger in a press release. Households, industry and companies would have to foot the bill.
