No material! After hours of waiting, doctors in Sicily improvise and cause a stir.
Elia Natoli, 30, never imagined that a fall from his motorbike would make him the centre of a media storm. “It all started with a stupid fall,” says Elia, from the Italian city of Messina in Sicily.
After a visit to the GP, where no hydrogen peroxide was available, Elia was sent to Patti’s hospital.
“They took cardboard out of hazardous waste”
Hours passed there without medical treatment as he waited in increasing pain. After the X-ray, the diagnosis: fibula fracture! However, the hospital had no rails. “They took cardboard from the hazardous waste,” Elia reports in local media. The ankle was temporarily stabilized and he was discharged with the advice to go to the orthopedist on Monday.
The temporary cast didn’t last long. Elia called a doctor friend who put her in touch with an aid organization. With their help and via video instructions from a doctor, Elia finally got a real splint and plaster.
“Tragicomic” incident
On Monday, the man went to a private medical center in Messina, where he was treated for 200 euros. After his return, Sicilian Governor Renato Schifani personally contacted him to apologize for the “tragicomic” incident.
