Before Musk interview – Trump makes surprise return to X

Date:

After years of absence, former US President Donald Trump is once again using his legendary account @realDonaldTrump on the social network X (formerly Twitter). Ahead of an interview with X owner Elon Musk, Trump posted several messages on X on Monday afternoon (local time), including a campaign video and an invitation for an interview.

After being banned from Twitter following the attempted insurrection on January 6, 2021 due to the risk of incitement of violence, Trump set up his own network, ‘Truth Social’. Even after Musk took over Twitter and lifted the ban, the ex-president stayed away from the network, aside from publishing the mugshot following his arrest the previous August.

In a video Trump published, he presents himself as a fighter against a supposedly existing ‘deep state’. The trials against him are portrayed as part of a conspiracy against Trump.

Here you can see the questionable video on Trump’s X channel:

Twitter was Trump’s favorite platform as US president
Trump’s X account still has 88 million followers. The real estate magnate had used the network, which was popular with politicians and journalists, extensively to carry out public relations work outside the conventional media. According to experts, this contributed significantly to his victory in the 2016 presidential election. Even as US president, he preferred to communicate via his Twitter account. He repeatedly insulted even his own advisers with provocative and erratic tweets.

Musk also spreads disinformation
X owner Musk recently identified himself as a Trump supporter. On Monday evening (local time, Tuesday evening CEST) the entrepreneur wanted to conduct an ‘interview’ with his political idol. The South African born has no journalistic experience. In his own network he repeatedly attracts attention for spreading disinformation.
