According to a survey, a clear majority of people in Germany are against the AfD’s participation in state governments after the upcoming state elections in eastern Germany. In eastern Germany, the rejection rate is 56 percent, lower than in the West (62 percent).
According to a survey published on Tuesday by broadcasters RTL and NTV, 61 percent of respondents across the country reject the AfD’s entry into the state governments in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg, even with high election results.
There are major concerns, especially in the East
In Germany as a whole, exactly one third of respondents would like the AfD to participate in government. A clear majority of respondents (69 percent) expressed concern about possible electoral victories for the AfD in the state elections. In the East, the concern is particularly high: 81 percent of voters currently have no preference for the AfD.
According to the latest polls, the AfD could emerge as the strongest force in the eastern state elections. In Saxony and Thuringia, where elections are scheduled for September 1, the party is polling at around 30 percent.
Both state associations of the AfD are classified as definitively right-wing extremist by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution. In Brandenburg, this is around 24 percent. The elections will take place there on September 22.
