The spokesman for the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights has demanded that the Israeli state conduct a genuine investigation into settler attacks on the Palestinian population in the occupied West Bank.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has claimed responsibility for the “horrific” massacre of Palestinian civilians in the West Bank, denouncing that Thursday’s attack in the town of Jit “was not an isolated incident”.
“We have condemned for years that settlers attack Palestinian communities on their land in the West Bank with impunity, and this is really the reason for the issue: impunity “which the perpetrators of such acts enjoy,” the spokesman complained, Ravina Shamdasani.
The reality of the inhabitants of the occupied territories is nothing more than a “direct consequence” of Israeli occupation policies, which have brought with them “years of violence against Palestinian communities by Israeli settlers.”
“It is clear that this situation must end, and for this it is essential that those responsible are held accountable,” Shamdasani stressed, criticizing the fact that “very few investigations have been carried out” and that, if there are, “in most cases it does not end with justice for the victims or the perpetrators.
“There are reports that the Israeli security forces are staying away from the attacks. There are even reports of distributing weapons to settlers. Therefore, it is clear that there is a state responsibility in this regard,” he added.
For his part, Josep Borrell, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Affairs, has imposed sanctions against members of the Israeli government for facilitating violence by settlers against indigenous people in the occupied West Bank.
According to the latest OHCHR data, at least 609 Palestinians have died in the West Bank since October 7 last year, including 146 children, eight women and at least four people with disabilities.
The latest attack took place in the village of Jit. About a hundred Israeli settlers, armed with clubs, firearms and Molotov cocktails, attacked the Palestinians en masse, killing one person.
