Hail horror, heavy rain on Saturday afternoon in Vienna. Within minutes, underpasses were flooded. Traffic collapsed. “Krone” reporter Ed Ricker showed moral courage near our press office in Döbling and freed a young man from his car stuck in the water.
Within seconds, in the oppressive humidity of late Saturday afternoon, the gates of heaven opened and rain, the likes of which Vienna had not seen for months, fell to the ground. Hailstones wrecked cars and underpasses around Heiligenstadt soon resembled swimming pools. Nevertheless, the drivers continued on their journey – with dramatic consequences.
The victim was completely exhausted and panicked
When a young man in his black Audi wanted to pass under the bridge on Gunoldstrasse, there was suddenly no way back and forth. The man stood helpless against the mass of water.
While many people were pulling out their cell phones, colleague Ed Ricker, who was on his way home, showed moral courage (see photos above). Supported by three other volunteers, he waded through the current, knocked on the window and was eventually able to encourage the now exhausted victim to get out of the trapped vehicle.
The quartet escorted the boy to safety. “Thank you very much for your efforts” – that was all that could pull the Viennese out of the shock. It was not until ten minutes later that the emergency services arrived at the scene of the incident.
