Alarm for the emergency services Saturday morning in Mauterndorf im Lungau: A small plane crashed near the airport. The 70-year-old pilot was injured and taken to the hospital on Tamsweg, the Red Cross and the police report. The plane was a total loss.
According to the police, the engine suddenly stopped shortly after take-off from Mauterndorf airfield. The pilot tried to make an emergency landing of the plane in a nearby field. The machine started and hit the garden fence of a single-family home. A witness called the emergency services.
The man was said to have been slightly injured in the incident and was taken to Tamsweg Hospital. The Mauterndorf and St. Michael fire departments were on duty. The Tamsweg fire station for hazardous materials was also alerted because aircraft fuel had to be pumped out of the wreckage.
Mauterndorf airfield, which is located at an altitude of 1,110 meters above sea level and challenges pilots, has seen repeated aviation accidents in recent years. In June 2018, a man was killed when a glider crashed. An emergency landing took place just this week: a pilot from Switzerland got into trouble after take-off.
