In Italy, a 23-year-old died after being bitten by a so-called brown recluse spider. He had suffered septic shock and organ failure.
As reported by the ANSA news agency, the young man was bitten by a spider in his leg more than a month ago. He was then treated in a hospital in Bari, southern Italy, where he died on Saturday. In July, a 52-year-old police officer in Sicily died after being bitten by a spider of the same species.
The brown recluse spider is found in the Mediterranean, Asia and North America. It measures only 7.5 millimetres and owes its name to a violin-shaped spot on its body. It prefers dry soil, holes in the ground and is often found near houses, especially in gardens.
