After the left-wing group was dissolved, ten MPs led by politician Sahra Wagenknecht formed a new group in the Bundestag on Tuesday. It is not surprising that the ex-left politician leads the ‘Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance’. At the beginning of this year, the BSW hopes to be recognized by the Bundestag.
Wagenknecht said she had been elected chairman and her colleague Klaus Ernst as deputy. At the same time, the new group submitted an application for recognition to Bundestag President Bärbel Bas. They hope for a decision in January, Wagenknecht said.
Can only act with permission
If the Bundestag plenum agrees, the parliamentarians will receive certain rights and financial support as a new group. The details are first discussed in the council of elders and then recorded in a decision. The remaining 28 MPs from the left had already applied for the status of a separate faction. The Bundestag has not yet provided any information about when the two motions could be voted on.
Wagenknecht and nine other MPs left the left-wing party in October. They want to establish their own party in January as a competing project – the actual formation is expected to take place on January 8, Wagenknecht said. The founding party conference has been announced for January 27.
Left faction disbanded
Without the former members, the left-wing faction lacked the minimum size of 37 MPs and was therefore dissolved last week. For the time being, all 38 former members are listed as “non-partisan” in the Bundestag and have only limited rights as individual members.
