A woman has died after complications from an abortion due to restrictive abortion laws in the US state of Georgia, the report is shocking.
According to the US investigative platform Propublica, this is the first death officially classified as “preventable” in connection with an abortion in the US. Amber Nicole Thurman, 28, suffered a rare complication after taking an abortion pill. She died during emergency surgery. The commission found that doctors performed a likely life-saving procedure too late, the Propublica report said. Georgia recently passed a law that criminalized hysterectomies with few exceptions. Doctors warned that the guidelines were vague and difficult to interpret.
The legal situation prevented rapid assistance
Thurman received medical attention too late in August 2022 because of the legal situation, Propublica reported, citing information from a U.S. state commission that investigated the matter.
“Amber would still be alive if (former President) Donald Trump and (Georgia Governor) Brian Kemp hadn’t upheld the abortion ban,” said activist Mini Timmaraju of the NGO Reproductive Freedom for All. “They have blood on their hands.”
In Georgia and 21 other US states, restrictive abortion laws came into effect after the Supreme Court in June 2022 struck down the nationwide right to abortion, which had existed for nearly five decades, and placed responsibility for abortion rights in the hands of the states.

Thurman traveled to North Carolina to have an abortion because of Georgia’s ban on abortions after the sixth week of pregnancy. However, complications arose in the days after taking the abortion pill and she was hospitalized in Georgia.
Doctors diagnosed acute sepsis. But despite her rapidly deteriorating health, they waited 17 hours before removing her uterus. Thurman died during the operation. “She died in the hospital, surrounded by medical personnel who could have saved her life,” feminist writer Jessica Valenti wrote of X. “This is the consequence of the abortion ban.”
