A woman has taken over the Bim station at Vienna’s Westbahnhof as an “apartment”. The hands of the Wiener Linien and other authorities are tied because it is public space.
A homeless woman has been living in a tram stop at Westbahnhof for over four years. She spends day and night there, in the heat and cold, with her belongings, including potted plants, lined up next to her.
At least two other homeless people are now staying overnight at the same stop.
provide support
“How can this happen?” ask passers-by and passengers. Can anyone now choose a park bench or a house entrance as a place to live? The Wiener Linien is aware of the situation and is trying to support the woman together with the police and aid organizations.
Public space for everyone
Caritas is in regular contact with the homeless, street workers and doctors from the crypt are said to regularly take care of them. It is said that it is not possible to evict them because the public space is available to everyone. “It often takes time for the homeless to accept support and move into accommodation,” says Caritas director Klaus Schwertner.
