At 9:00 on Sunday morning, the emergency services received the alarm: The roof structure of a residential building in Riegersburg, in southeastern Styria, had caught fire. The 54-year-old homeowner tried to set a wasp nest on fire with a gas cartridge burner. But the action went wrong – because suddenly the roof was on fire. He and his neighbors tried to extinguish the fire with fire extinguishers and water, but to no avail.
When the emergency services (FF Feldbach, Kornberg-Bergl, Schützing, Lödersdorf, Riegersburg, Weinberg adR, Johnsdorf-Brunn, Hatzendorf and St. Stefan iR, police, Red Cross, crisis intervention team) arrived, a full-scale fire had already broken out. 15 vehicles and 80 Florianis were fighting the flames. However, after the extinguishing work was completed, a sad picture emerged: the entire upper floor was destroyed. There was considerable material damage, for an as yet unknown amount, but no one was injured.
