Lightning struck repeatedly across the country on Sunday. The Austrian Severe Weather Center (UWZ) has located 52,744 lightning strikes as of 21:10, most of them in Lower Austria.
In Vienna too, many lightning strikes were seen, for example in the 19th district Döbling. The heavy weather center (UWZ) posted the view from the Marina Tower on Sunday evening – “without time-lapse”, as they say. For more than 20 seconds you can see how the sky is lit up by the constant lightning.
Some users on the X platform posted additional photos and videos, for example from Vienna’s city center, Tullnerfeld and the Mistelbach district in Lower Austria.

Hail in the St. Pölten region
“Today there were thunderstorms with storms, heavy rain and hail in the greater St. Pölten area, especially in northern Austria and southern Styria,” the heavy weather center announced on Sunday evening. In Lower Austria, the helpers had to carry out pumping work, remove fallen trees and clean streets. From Sunday afternoon, the areas of St. Pölten, Amstetten, Waldviertel and Weinviertel were affected. There were new floods in Hollabrunn.

Serious damage to the wine harvest
Thunderstorms and showers were also reported from Linz and Wels (Upper Austria). Late on Sunday evening (22:32) there were two severe weather warnings in the whole of Austria: for Upper Austria and Lower Austria. Level orange applies to Vorarlberg, Tyrol and Salzburg. There were advance warnings for the other federal states of Styria, Carinthia, Burgenland and Vienna.
In Vienna, it has now become known what damage the previous day’s hailstorm caused to the winegrowing industry. This amounts to around 500,000 euros, the Austrian hail insurance announced in a broadcast on Sunday. The Nussberg was particularly affected. “The problem is that the grapes are already very ripe and have therefore entered a very sensitive phase,” they say. In the federal capital, 110 liters per square meter fell on Saturday.
