29th edition – bird droppings, climate glue: 3000 new Duden words

Date:

The Duden has once again significantly expanded its content. The 29th edition, which will be officially published on Tuesday, contains no less than 3,000 new words that show how alive our language is. Hundreds of old words have been removed.

Anyone who wants to understand the German-speaking world cannot do without the standard work. The new Duden is not only a manual for correct spelling, but also a reflection of current social developments and language trends, the publisher recently announced.

Bird droppings, corona deniers, Ukraine war, …
Terms such as climate glue, corona denier, Ukraine war, balcony center, Quetschie (small fruit puree in squeeze pouches), Offifant, Vogelschiss, trigger warning (indication of potentially incriminating content) or matching (fitting things or people together) made it into the official German dictionary.

It is striking that more and more anglicisms are creeping into the German language. In other words, expressions or sayings that have been adopted from the English language.

151,000 entries – new record!
But for these new additions, some old-fashioned words like ‘fridge’ – an outdated term for refrigerator – had to make way. The Duden now has a total of 151,000 entries. A new record!
