Storm in Pinzgau – When it comes to cleaning up the next day, there is a lot of solidarity

Date:

Major clean-up in Pinzgau: In Kaprun and Zell am See, the fire brigades were constantly on the move. The state geologist was able to give the green light for two threatened houses in Thumersbach on Sunday. Several rubble barriers are filled to the brim. Dredging work is underway.

Doomsday scenarios in Zell am See and Kaprun: When the sky darkened on Saturday night, residents feared the worst. An apartment building on the Schaufelberg in Kaprun was hit again within days. Several truckloads of rubble and mud had already been removed.

Now the work starts again. The damage is enormous. The house will remain closed until Christmas at least. The residents of Schaufelberg were still asked to stay on the upper floors of their homes on Sunday. “We will wait and see how the weather develops and then decide whether a new road closure on Schaufelberg is necessary,” says disaster officer Manfred Höger.

Several mudslides occurred in the municipality of Kaprun. After thunderstorms last Monday and Friday, parts of the community were flooded for the third time. It was also a strenuous Sunday for the flow control workers: the debris barriers in the Menggraben, which had just been cleared, now had to be dredged again. The next day, holidaymakers were unimpressed and struggled with their bicycles over debris.

Fire brigades in Kaprun and Zell am See were called
The Kaprun fire brigade was on duty continuously at night and on Sunday with 36 emergency services: “I have never experienced anything like this in my 16 years with the fire brigade,” said Mayor Domenik David after heavy cleaning work and thanked the population for maximum cohesion.

No more danger for threatened houses
The Zell am See fire brigade had 33 deployment points spread across the city. The focus was Thumersbach, where a resident was surprised by a mudslide at the back of his house. He was trapped, injured and rescued during a complex operation. State geologist Gerald Valentin assessed the situation in Thumersbach on Sunday: two threatened houses on Erlberg are habitable again. Work on the main road was still ongoing in the evening. In Schüttdorf, retention basins prevented greater damage.

Concerned eyes are turned to the sky. In Pinzgau there is great hope that no more large amounts of rain will fall.
