For every 10,000 inhabitants, there are 54 bars and restaurants in the Basque Country and 42 in the Foral community. As in the BAC, the number of catering establishments in the Spanish state has decreased significantly since 2012.
Nowadays there are 14,771 bars and restaurants in Hego Euskal Herria11,966 in the Basque Autonomous Community – 8,033 bars and 3,933 restaurants – and 2,805 in Navarre – 2,076 bars and 729 restaurants. Over the past decade (2012-2022), the evolution of these figures has been uneven in the BAC and in the Foral community; 772 catering establishments have closed their doors in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa, while 92 new ones have opened in Navarra.
Similarly, as in the BAC, in the Spanish state the number of bars and restaurants has decreased significantly since 2012: a total of 10,656 establishments closed their shutters during that period. These are some of the most relevant data collected in the latest report prepared by EITB Data under the title ‘Eating and drinking away from home: habits, health, economic activity…’.
For every 10,000 inhabitants, there are 54 bars and restaurants in Euskadi and 42 in the Foral community, with important differences between the capitals: Bilbao and Donostia have 98 and 63 catering establishments per 10,000 inhabitants respectively, and Vitoria-Gasteiz 50. .
They are also found differences as it may be bar or restaurant. In terms of restaurants, Euskadi is among the communities with the highest percentage of restaurants in the state, with 18 restaurants per 10,000 in the BAC (the state average is 17), while in Navarre this figure is much lower, at 11 per 10,000. at the top of the rankings are the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, Valencia and Catalonia.
In the case of bars, Hego Euskal Herria is at the bottom of the list, below the state average (37). For every 10,000 residents, there are 36 bars in Euskadi and 31 in the Foral community.
On the other hand, the European comparison shows that in Euskadi and Navarra there are more bars than in Europe per 10,000 inhabitants, but fewer restaurants. It is clear that Portugal is the country that tops the rankings with 73 catering establishments per 10,000 inhabitants.
In addition to quantity, EITB Data also has the quality of the branches. For example, 11% of the state’s restaurants with a Michelin star can be found in Hego Euskal Herria. Similarly, 11 of the 100 state properties with some sun in the Repsol guide are in Álava, Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Navarra.
