A group of caravans wanted to pitch their tents in Oberwart. After a warning from the municipality in the south of Burgenland, the convoy moved on to Unterwart. But even there you are not happy.
“They come like a storm and want everything. This sobriety is brutal,” says city administrator Georg Rosner, who criticizes the recent visit of a walking group to Oberwart. The wagon train – mainly Roma and Sinti from France – has been visiting the district for decades.
On Friday, more than two dozen caravans and cars made themselves comfortable again in the parking lot behind the fairgrounds. This time, the stay should be over faster than expected. Rosner said: “I told them we needed the parking lot because of a lot of events and they couldn’t stay parked.”
The request was also granted and the entourage was withdrawn to the former Kika business premises in Unterwart. But the people there are not happy either, says local boss Hannes Nemeth: “According to the landowner, there is no permit for that.” But the hikers themselves do not want to travel any further for another two weeks. Until then, craft services are offered. These home transactions are always discouraged – the costs are extremely high.
