London Zoo has taken down a work of art by British artist Banksy and replaced it with a copy. The image shows a gorilla lifting the shutter and seemingly releasing other animals.
A sign stated that the artwork had been removed from public view to preserve it and restore full use of the entrance.
The zoo said next steps have yet to be decided. “We apologize for any disappointment, but we hope you can still enjoy the joy and creativity of Banksy’s brilliant work here.”
The anonymous Banksy had unveiled nine animal photos, including an ibex, three monkeys and two pelicans, on the facade of a fish and chip shop.
Satellite dish removed, rhino smeared
Public art, however, is vulnerable to vandalism and theft. A masked man defaced a rhinoceros just hours after its unveiling. Unidentified people also dismantled a satellite dish depicting a howling wolf.

A police station containing piranhas was first cordoned off amid fears of destruction and then moved to a safe location, the City of London said.
A large cat on a billboard was also taken down after a short time, allegedly for safety reasons. The owner has promised to donate the work to an art gallery.
