The decline in asylum seekers continued in July, with 1,766 applications the lowest monthly figure in 2024. The numbers are still high compared to recent history.
This brings the total this year to 15,245 applications. This is considerably less than the two previous years (minus 47 percent compared to 2023), but the figures are already higher than those for the entire years 2018, 2019 and 2020.
The numbers in primary care have dropped significantly. At the beginning of this year, almost 79,000 people were being cared for, but now that number is down by about 7,000. 52 percent of those receiving basic care are displaced persons from Ukraine.
Half of the applications for minors
The asylum figures for the first seven months show that family reunification dominated the applications, especially at the beginning of the year. In terms of age groups, young people up to the age of seven form the strongest group and 53 percent of asylum seekers are under the age of 18. The number of female asylum seekers is also unusually high at 45 percent.
On the other hand, illegal migration to Austria is decreasing sharply, which is particularly evident from the number of arrests in Burgenland. In mid-August this year, there were 757 people. In 2022, more than 33,000 people were arrested in Burgenland, compared to almost 16,000 the year before.
The majority come from Syria
As for the countries of origin, the July statistics also do not show much new. 50 percent of the applications came from Syrians. During the first seven months, 61 percent of the applications were submitted by citizens of this country. The second strongest group are the Afghans.
