An explosive device in a man’s backpack detonated on a street in Tel Aviv on Sunday, killing the suspected assassin and wounding an e-scooter rider. Hamas has since claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Izzedin al-Kassam Brigades announced on Monday that the law was published together with Islamic Jihad. Israeli authorities confirmed an assassination attempt. A “powerful explosive device” detonated in the south of the coastal city, police and the Shin Bet domestic intelligence agency said.
The target of the attack may have been a nearby synagogue. If the explosion had occurred just a few meters away, “we would have woken up to a huge catastrophe,” a police spokesman said. Police initially declined to comment on the identity of the deceased suspect. Public broadcaster Kan reported that he was a Palestinian from Nablus in the West Bank.
Increased alertness
The exact background was initially unclear on Sunday evening. Security forces in the greater Tel Aviv area have been placed on heightened alert. “We urge citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious person or objection to the police,” the report said.
There have been repeated serious attacks by Palestinians in the city in the past, and police said Sunday they were investigating in all directions.
