During a violent confrontation on Leipzig’s infamous Eisenbahnstrasse on Sunday afternoon, a man pulled out a machete and attacked opponents. Two men (26 each) were injured.
A video distributed via the short message service X (formerly Twitter) documents the street fight on the infamous, multicultural Eisenbahnstrasse. Irony: this has been a no-gun zone since 2018, as planned for Vienna’s Reumannplatz.
The moving footage (see video above) shows a group of about a dozen men punching each other. A man lies bleeding on the ground. Suddenly an attacker approaches with a machete, kicks an opponent and strikes one of the men lying on the ground with the blunt side. His victim was said to have been ‘only’ injured, but not killed.
Skirmishes can be seen in the background and angry insults can be heard in Turkish. The recording ends after almost a minute.
Police spokesman Olaf Hoppe (46) from Leipzig told Bild: “We are aware of the video and have secured it. It will be included in our investigation into the altercation in Eisenbahnstrasse.”
“Late on Sunday afternoon there was an argument between several people in a green area on Eisenbahnstrasse between Idastrasse and Elisabethstrasse. Those involved are said to have had dangerous objects with them, and whether these were used is the subject of an ongoing investigation. According to the current findings, two 26-year-old men were injured, one of whom required outpatient medical care. Police have begun an investigation into the reasons for the altercation, involvement in the crime and suspicion of dangerous bodily harm.”
Gang war probably in the drug environment
The background is still vague, because the injured people left behind – the rest of the men were able to escape before the police arrived – remain silent about the incident. However, it was probably a gang war in the drug community.
By the way: the weapons ban zone on Eisenbahnstrasse must be abolished; its institution was declared “ineffective” by the Saxony Supreme Court in 2021.
