Blazing 34 degrees – heat warning! Summer is far from over

Date:

There is hardly a cloud to be seen above Austria at the moment. The scorching heat has been providing tropical nights for days. If you don’t want to say goodbye to summer yet, you can still look forward to the coming days: autumn is still far away!

From west to east: the maximum temperatures in the entire country are above 30 degrees. In Vorarlberg up to 31 degrees are measured, in the federal capital even 34 degrees. According to Geosphere Austria, a few showers or thunderstorms are possible in the mountains on Friday, but elsewhere it will remain sunny and mainly warm.

Summer temperatures remain constant
The high-pressure weather with lots of sun and high temperatures will continue on Saturday, so cooling down on the lakes or in the outdoor pool is on the agenda for many Austrians. However, individual thunderstorms cannot be ruled out in the west. The temperatures are almost exactly the same as the previous day.

September 1st will also be almost a repeat of the day before: the day starts sunny and dry, in the west there can be isolated showers or thunderstorms from the second half of the day. The temperatures will remain the same: 34 degrees is possible.

The beginning of September remains warm
The beginning of the week also offers little variety: the warm climate continues. But with the oppressive heat, the chance of storms also increases: in the west, the cumulus clouds become increasingly powerful from noon and towards the evening, rain and thunderstorms are expected mainly in Tyrol, Vorarlberg, East Tyrol and Salzburg, but also in large parts of Upper and Lower Austria and in the west of Styria. In the far east and south, it remains sunny and dry. The temperatures remain approximately the same.

On Tuesday, there may even be a rise in previous temperatures: 35 degrees is expected! In the west, local rain showers are possible again in the afternoon.

Hottest summer in measurement history
The inhabitants of Upper Austria in particular are struggling with the drought in the country. In Linz and Freistadt, the summer was the warmest in the history of measurements. However, the absolute highest temperature of the year was measured in the south of the country, in Weyer: on 29 June, the thermometer there indicated 35.6 degrees. Together with Linz, Weyer is at the top in terms of daily maximums in Upper Austria, with 29 days above 30 degrees (up to and including 28 August).

Records were also set for the number of tropical nights throughout Austria. There have already been 44 in the centre of Vienna and according to meteorologist Nikolas Zimmermann, there will be more in the coming days. According to Zimmermann, the summer of 2024 will most likely end up in first place among the warmest in recorded history, just ahead of the summers of 2003 and 2019.
