More winter weather for the first weekend of April

Date:

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that more winter weather awaits us this weekend. On Saturday morning, the National Weather Service issued a yellow alert on the ice, which could cause “some injuries due to landslides and falls” and “possible travel delays” in the eastern regions.

Covering the eastern half of the country, including the Scottish border, Northumberland, Durham, North Yorkshire, Yorkshire, East Reading and Lincolnshire, the alert will run until 10am today. The freezing weather this month comes after the UK experienced its sunniest rally since 1929.

Northern Ireland gets 90% more sunlight than average per month, a total of 192.5 hours of sunshine. Scotland experienced 64% more brightness than normal for 160.1 hours.

The bright outlook was repeated in the UK, with England seeing the second sunniest month of March at 168.1 hours and Wales the fifth sunniest at 157.9 hours. Nighttime temperatures will be a few degrees lower than the average time of year, with freezing conditions in UK cities, said Dan Stroud, a meteorologist at the Met Office.

Stroud said the winter weather caused by the UK’s Arctic air crossing will continue over the weekend. He added: “It’s generally dry and cool, although slightly less cold than what we’ve seen in the next few days.

“We currently have arctic air flow from a cold spring. So we have mostly fresh, cool air across the UK and there is a lot of clear and sunny skies as well, especially in the western parts of the UK.”

Mr Stroud said temperatures were expected to rise from an average of 10 degrees Celsius on weekends to around 14 degrees Celsius on Monday. This will be a consequence of the distance of the arctic air system.
