Not a week goes by in Carinthia when mountain rescuers don’t have to rescue holidaymakers from emergencies in the Alps. This time, four Germans were even stuck overnight on the Lärchenscharte after one of their group was injured.
“The four mountain partners from Germany set off from the Koschutahaus on Sunday around 5 p.m. for a mountain tour over the Lärchenturm via ferrata in the direction of the border ridge to the Koschutnikturm,” the police said. A very demanding tour that also requires precise planning.
Osselation stopped projects
During the march to Lärchenberg, a 42-year-old member of the group lost his ankle, which meant that everyone could only make slow progress. “The group finally fell in the darkness on the ridge. Since no one knew how to get down, they decided to go back to Lärchenscharte, spend the night there and go down the next day.”
Lack of equipment and poor planning
However, after spending the night outside, there was a rude awakening. “The Germans found that they could not descend the Larch Gorge independently due to a lack of necessary equipment and because of the ankle injury of their mountain companion. “So they made an emergency call at around 5:30 a.m.,” the police said.
Mountain rescuers and alpine police were deployed during heavy rain
The Ferlach mountain rescue service and the Alpine police had to go to the people on Monday during heavy rain and provide them with dry clothing, drinks and food. The four Germans were then brought individually through the gorge, which was very susceptible to falling rocks, to the valley. The slightly injured 42-year-old then sought medical help himself.
