The Israeli army has recovered the bodies of at least five hostages in the Gaza Strip, whose hometowns of Nir Oz and Nirim were attacked by the radical Islamist Hamas on October 7, 2023.
Among the victims were Nadav Popplewell and Yegev Buchstav of Nirim and Yoram Metzger and Haim Peri of Nir Oz, who had previously been declared dead by Israeli intelligence.
Kibbutz Nir Oz had earlier announced the death of 79-year-old Avraham Munder. “It is with great sadness that Kibbutz Nir Oz announces the killing of Avraham Munder, 79, in captivity in Gaza,” the report said. The hostage’s son was killed during the Hamas attack on his city.
Several family members kidnapped
Both Avraham Munder and his wife, daughter and grandson were taken hostage and deported to the Gaza Strip. While his family was released in November during the only ceasefire to date, Munder himself was physically and psychologically tortured for months.
In the massive attack on Israel, a total of 1,198 people were killed. Another 250 were taken to the Gaza Strip and 111 remain there. But at least 40 of them are no longer alive. Negotiations are currently underway to release the remaining hostages under a ceasefire.
Protest for agreement
On Monday, hundreds of people again took to the streets in Israel outside US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s hotel in Tel Aviv to demand a deal. At the time, Blinken was meeting with relatives of the kidnapped. Protesters called on him to pressure Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to agree to a hostage deal.
