South Sudan is currently being shaken by a wave of snake attacks, sometimes due to heavy rainfall.
According to local media reports, nearly 90 snake attacks have been reported in South Sudan’s Bahr el-Ghazal state alone after the start of the rainy season.
Where houses are flooded, the snakes can be washed in and the animals are often noticed too late, even on flooded streets. Especially in remote villages it is difficult to provide patients with antiserum in time after bites by poisonous snakes.
As Radio Tamzuj reported, citing local authorities, four people have died from snakebites so far. In addition, 83 people have been injured by snakebites in recent weeks.
The worst flooding in decades
Bahr el-Ghazal is located in the northwest of South Sudan on the border with Sudan, where severe flooding has also been reported for weeks. In other regions of South Sudan, the rainy season has yet to begin. Experts expect the worst flooding in decades.
