Parking lots blocked – all smuggling cars have disappeared from the border

Date:

Confiscated cars and vans, which had been blocking many parking spaces for months, were considered a thorn in the flesh. Strict action was taken – and with success. The vehicles have since disappeared.

For many residents of the border communities, the tin evidence of illegal migration is a thorn in the side. Only recently has the “Krone” once again pointed out the obvious consequences of human trafficking and the discontent among the population. Now the affected communities can breathe a sigh of relief.

Towing companies picked up vehicles
All cars and vans of smuggling gangs that were stopped and parked directly at the border or that were stopped during their escape in the hinterland and found in public parking lots have recently been picked up by towing companies.

“The vehicles, some of which were completely dilapidated, were scrapped or – if roadworthy – temporarily stored by the companies,” it said.

About ten vehicles affected
Wulkaprodersdorf, Eisenstadt, Deutschkreutz, Nikitsch, Oberwart, Schachendorf and Heiligenkreuz were on the towing tour. In Rattersdorf alone, four cars with trailers were taken away. In total, there were about ten bodies. Other vehicles that were used for prohibited refugee journeys have already been auctioned. The only cars that remained at the border were cars that had to be parked for other reasons, not because of smuggling. In two cases, these are vehicles that are not roadworthy and are the responsibility of Oberpullendorf BH.

The time it takes for the tow truck to be retrieved varies from case to case. The deadlines depend on many factors. If the Eisenstadt prosecutor’s office is still investigating the perpetrator(s), different rules apply than in a case where the investigation has been completed and the judge has jurisdiction.

Assistance from the Minister of the Interior
Lieutenant Colonel Helmut Marban of the State Police Directorate: “Now we have been able to carry out what we have been working on for months, and do it thoroughly.” All vehicles are gone! Strong support came from Minister of the Interior Gerhard Karner. The expectation is that the consequences of human trafficking in Burgenland will be limited in the future.

The current figures speak for themselves: exactly 784 refugees registered since January, compared to 15,830 detentions in the comparable period of 2023 and 33,360 detentions in 2022.
