While hotel take-ups fell by 1.8%, the opposite occurred in rural houses, apartments and tourist lodges, which grew by 2.5%, 9.6% and 18.6% respectively. However, the occupancy rate in the latter is between 50 and 60%.
The July data published today by the Basque Institute of Statistics EUSTAT show that the tourism sector has grown significantly. Despite the decrease in the number of tourists in hotels, the number of people staying there has increased rural houses, apartments and tourist lodges have increased. With respect to July 2023, the rural accommodation registered a 2.5% more than entries. This increase is greater in the apartments (9.6%) and in hostels (18.6%).
However, the accommodations are not yet completely full. In rural accommodations and apartments the occupation of the places amounted to 50.7% and 52.4% respectively, while the shelters amounted to 61.2%.

Detailing of the data per type of accommodation, the country houses have registered this month of July in total 24,041 entries which resulted in 73,311 overnight stays. Like admissions, overnight stays also increased compared to last year, albeit to a lesser extent, by 0.2%.
In this case, the majority of tourists come from the state (68.4%), although the increase in the number of tourists from abroad has been significant; it has increased by 7.2% and now reaches 31.6% of those staying in rural houses in Álava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa.
By province, entries have increased in Álava (16.7%) and Gipuzkoa (3.2%), while in Bizkaia they have fallen by 4.8%. As for overnight stays, they have fallen in Bizkaia (8.4% less) and Gipuzkoa (1.3% less), but in Álava they have increased significantly, by 31.8%.
As for the tourist apartments (excluding tourist and private homes) in total 26,778 entries and 79,955 overnight stays. Compared to July 2023, there is an increase of 9.6% in admissions and 9.4% in overnight stays.
In this case, almost half (49%) correspond to tourists of foreign origin, whose arrivals in these accommodations have increased by 20.9% compared to last year.
Finally, the largest number of entries took place in the tourist hostels: total 32,526which have yielded 67,130 overnight stays. In fact, the largest increase compared to July 2024 has also occurred in this type of accommodation, namely 18.6%.
In Bizkaia, 34,233 overnight stays were recorded, 31.3% more than in July 2023, and in Gipuzkoa, 31,674, after an 18.1% increase year-on-year. Finally, in Álava, the number of overnight stays was 1,223, 19% more than in the same month of the previous year.
