Couple describes drama – Walls shock: “Thought, now we’re dead”

Date:

Caught by a mudslide, trapped in your own car, terrified: these were horror scenes that a Slovakian couple had to experience on Friday evening during the storm in the Tyrolean Stubai Valley. Kristian and his girlfriend Simona now described their shock experience at the “Krone”.

“We thought we were over now, these are our last moments,” said Kristian (26) a few days after the accident in Fulpmes.

It was Friday evening, a violent storm swept through the Tyrolean Stubai Valley. The Slovak, who lives in Inzing (Innsbruck-Land district), was picking up his girlfriend Simona from work at a hotel in Neustift and was about to have dinner with her when a car suddenly stopped in front of them. It turned out to be the car of the now missing Pastor Augustin.

“I saw stones the size of a football on the road. Then came the Mure. The other car was gone and suddenly everything went dark,” Kristian told the Krone. His vehicle was taken away. Within seconds everything was covered in dirt, debris and mud.

“Stay awake, talk to me, Simona”
“It was like being cast in concrete. We tried to dig ourselves out with our fingers. Failed. Our fingernails broke to the flesh,” Kristian describes the dramatic moments, adding: “Simona was getting more and more tired and just wanted to sleep. But I said stay awake, talk to me!”

Only 34 degrees body temperature
The couple was buried up to their chests, hypothermic – their body temperature was just 34 degrees. It took an estimated 15 minutes for firefighters to arrive and make their way to them. After an hour, the two Slovaks were liberated.

Broken shoulder and rib
“If our heads had been buried, we would have been dead by now,” Kristian is sure. The 26-year-old suffered bruises and scrapes all over his body, Simona also broke her shoulder and a rib. She had to stay in the hospital for two nights.

Kristian picked them up there on Sunday – and then they went straight to the Neustift fire brigade. “We wanted to thank you. That’s the least we can do. Because if the firefighters hadn’t got us out of the car, we wouldn’t be alive now.”
