The Greek oil tanker “Sounion” was attacked in the Red Sea. The 25 crew members were taken to Djibouti, a representative of the EU naval operation ‘Aspides’ said. This is the third attack on a Delta Tankers ship in the Red Sea in August.
The Houthi militia in Yemen repeatedly attacks merchant ships, justifying this as solidarity with Hamas in the war with Israel in the Gaza Strip. However, the militia has not yet claimed responsibility for the attack on the “Sounion”.
Here you see pictures of the ship being shot at.
The ship was hit by multiple projectiles on Wednesday about 77 nautical miles west of the port city of Hodeidah in Yemen. A fire then broke out on board. In addition, its engines failed, leaving the tanker unable to maneuver and drifting in the Red Sea.
Surface vessel destroyed
The crew was rescued and taken to Djibouti. An unmanned surface vehicle that posed a threat to the “Sounion” had been destroyed earlier.
The ship was loaded with a million barrels of oil. It is now anchored between Yemen and Eritrea.
