The RK-1 medical emergency helicopter left on Thursday for a difficult mission in the area of the 3,360-meter-high Hochalmspitze in Upper Carinthia. There, a mountaineer (67) from Lower Austria fell.
The Lower Austrian fell on the steep terrain during the climb to the Hochalmspitze and suffered serious injuries. At the time of the operation, the Hochalmspitze was repeatedly shrouded in fog.
Flying to the intermediate landing site
“We first brought the mountain rescue team close to the accident site and then waited at an intermediate landing site at the Fallbach waterfall until a weather window opened for a quick rescue operation,” says ARA pilot Herbert Graf. The hypothermic patient was then brought on board using a crash rescue, given emergency medical care at the intermediate landing site and then flown to the Villach LKH.
The four-man ARA air rescue team was supported in this high mountain operation by the Libelle police helicopter, the PI Gmünd and the Liesertal/Maltatal mountain rescue service.
