Four days after the sailing ship ‘Bayesian’ sank off the coast of Palermo, the last body has been recovered. This is Hannah Lynch, the 18-year-old daughter of British tycoon Michael Lynch. This brought the death toll to seven.
Experienced divers who had already rescued victims from the sunken cruise ship Costa Concordia (2012) took part in the search. A total of 27 were deployed. The ‘Bayesian’ lies on its side at a depth of 50 meters, which made the search difficult. Numerous obstacles and narrow spaces hampered the work. On Friday, divers finally penetrated the ship’s hull and found the body of Hannah Lynch.
Who died in the accident
The dead included Lynch and his daughter, as well as senior investment bank executive Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Anne Elizabeth, and lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Nada. The body of the ship’s cook was found on Monday.
The ship should have been sold
As reported by the British newspaper Daily Telegraph, Michael Lynch put Bayesian up for sale in March of this year. However, he changed his mind two months later when he was acquitted in a US criminal trial in June. He was accused of fraud in connection with the takeover of his multinational computer company Autonomy.
When he was acquitted, Lynch decided to spend the summer with his family and friends on the yacht. The shipwreck occurred Monday morning after a strong hurricane. 15 of the 22 passengers were able to save themselves or were rescued. It is currently believed that a number of human errors led to the accident.
