Pope Francis has cancelled a video link to the European Forum Alpbach in Tyrol, originally scheduled for Saturday. The organizers say they were informed about this by the Vatican on Thursday evening and regret the cancellation.
The Pope addressed the participants in a letter. In it, Francis identified a “populist wave” as a result of a crisis in Europe. “The dignity of man” and “fraternity” must be preserved.
“Seek ways and means”
With the rise of populist movements, “some ideals have faded and some principles regarding how to treat the most vulnerable in our society have faded into the background,” Pope Francis wrote. The church must defend its values in a “secularized society,” but it must do so “with renewed vigour.”
European society must “strive to find ways and means both to reduce polarization within its own midst and to remain open to the outside world,” the pope concluded his two-page letter.
A lot of work has gone into the preparation
Pope Francis was supposed to speak at the opening of the “Europe in the World Days”. Organizers were disappointed by the “surprising” cancellation, especially since a lot of work had gone into preparing the video appearance together with the local parish.
The reason for the cancellation is currently unclear
The Vatican gave no reason for the cancellation. Now the letter from the Roman Catholic church leader has been posted online.
