Israeli and Hamas delegations are in Cairo to push for a ceasefire

Date:

The positions of Israelis and Palestinians are very distant, despite the efforts of Egypt and Qatar to reach a ceasefire to stop the genocide and free the hostages.

The Israeli delegation is one day after the Hamasto resume negotiations on a ceasefire and the release of hostages in the Gaza StripAll parties consider this moment to be very important, especially now that clashes between Israel and Hezbollah on the border with Lebanon are intensifying.

According to The Times of Israelthe Israeli mission is led by David Barneahead of the Mossad, the foreign intelligence services, and therefore Ronen Barhead of the Shin Bet, the intelligence services for the interior of Israel and the Palestinian territories.

The delegation of Islamic Resistance MovementHamas has been in the Egyptian capital since Saturday and has already been briefed on the status of contacts by Egyptian and Qatari mediators, after two weeks of work without a Palestinian presence to try to reach an agreement based on the US ceasefire proposal.

One of the key points of the negotiations is the Palestinian request for make the ceasefire permanentand not temporarily, as this would leave the door open for Israel to resume the offensive.

Another important aspect is the Israeli demand to maintain this policy military presence on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egyptaccording to Israel, to prevent possible smuggling and rearmament attempts by Hamas, but both Egypt and the Palestinian movement reject that possibility.

According to Israeli sources, the United States is putting pressure on Israel to make it clear that it is not seeking an escalation with Hezbollah, but that it is seeking an agreement with Hamas.

They also disagree on Israel’s demand to prevent this return of the militias Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip, as well as the number and names of Israelis held by Hamas and Palestinians in Israeli prisons who would be issued at every stage.

Meanwhile, the Israeli opposition continues to pressure the government with recurring demonstrations. The leader of the opposition, Jair Lapidurged Netanyahu to travel to Cairo himself to strike a deal.

In the role of mediator, the Egyptian President, Abdel Fattah al-Sisihas already received the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, Charles Brownto whom he conveyed the need to take far-reaching decisions to prevent an escalation of violence.

He specifically referred to the situation in Lebanon, calling for the security and sovereignty of that country to be guaranteed amid the military offensive that Israeli authorities are defending as a “preventive strike” against Hezbollah.

Al Sisi has called for a “coordinated international effort” to “open a comprehensive political process for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state within the framework of the two-state solution,” which he considers essential for long-term regional stability.
