A young couple turned themselves in after they split up last year. Both are now being tried for persistent violence. The first reconciliation between the two 19-year-olds took place in a court in Vienna.
Blonde, pretty and slender: from the outside, you wouldn’t suspect that the 19-year-old is accused of persistent violence against her ex-boyfriend. In front of Hall 33 of the Vienna Regional Court, the two don’t even look at each other. Not surprising given that both are currently facing criminal charges against the other.
Ex-couple reported each other
First, the young Viennese woman is put on trial: when the relationship ended last year, her ex, who was the same age, reported her for violent outbursts. And this was during his interrogation of the suspect, because she had previously filed a complaint against him. Both accuse each other of having hit and scratched each other in various attacks from April to December 2022.
Reconciliation in court instead of condemnation
“I rarely have something like that. “It’s a bit unusual for two young people who are separating to sue each other,” says Mrs Rat, suggesting that if an apology is made, the proceedings could also be stopped in exchange for an amicable settlement. “I think we can resolve this as adults,” agrees the 19-year-old. And her ex agrees.
After a handshake, a mumbled “sorry” and a half-hearted twitch in the corner of her mouth, the young Viennese can go home without being judged. The 19-year-old is still awaiting his trial, which will likely have a similar outcome. The judge gives the two a piece of advice: “In a relationship, you can argue. That’s normal. But maybe you can skip the fistfights in the future.”
