Mudslides, power outages and floods. On Sunday evening, a heavy thunderstorm cell is moving across Upper Carinthia. That is why a civil protection warning was issued in Baldramsdorf.
The Upper Carinthia fire brigade is called out again. A thunderstorm cell causes several operations – especially in the Spittal district. “Specifically, it concerns the town of Schwaig in Baldramsdorf. We have registered several mudslides there,” says Walter Egger, press spokesman for the Spittal fire brigade. People are encouraged to stay in their homes. Residential buildings near the Schwaigerbach, which threatens to overflow its banks, are particularly at risk.
Several roads have been relocated due to fallen trees. “In Schreigraben, a farm is cut off from the outside world, but we are in contact with the residents,” Egger continued. In the Schwaig region, several households are without electricity. Baldramsdorf can no longer be reached from the Spittal direction because a mudflow has buried part of the Baldramsdorfer Landesstraße.
Basement under water and flooding
“In the town of Spittal, several cellars are flooded, they need to be pumped out and the streets need to be cleared,” Egger continued.
The situation is being assessed
While the emergency services were busy all night, a helicopter from the Ministry of the Interior will be conducting a further aerial survey of the situation on Monday morning to assess the risk. According to the emergency services, a drone will also be deployed to get an idea of the tense situation.
