Russia attacks 15 regions of Ukraine, including the capital Kiev

Date:

Zelensky has assured that more than 100 missiles and about 100 drones were used and that the target of the attacks was the country’s energy infrastructure, although four civilians were among the fatalities.

Russia launched a massive attack with drones and missiles against at least 15 of Ukraine’s 24 regions, including the capital Kiev. President Volodymyr Zelensky assured in his Telegram account that the Russian military used it more than 100 missiles and almost 100 droneswith the aim of demolishing energy infrastructures of the country.

Prime Minister Denis Shmigal, for his part, reported that the attack caused deaths and injuries. Earlier, the authorities of the Volyn (north-west), Dnipropetrovsk (center), Zaporizhia (southeast) and Zhytomyr (center-west) regions spoke about the death of four people.

Shmigal explained that Russian forces used drones, cruise missiles and Kinzhal hypersonic missiles in the attack. The latter are the most difficult to intercept and Ukraine is vulnerable to them across most of its territory.

Several explosions were heard in the capital Kiev from 8:30 a.m. local time (7:30 a.m. in the Basque Country) and authorities have asked all residents of the city and the region to seek shelter in bunkers, basements or metro stations.

In the words of the Prime Minister: “the goal of Russian terrorists has been the energy infrastructure again“Unfortunately, there is damage in several regions,” he said, reporting power outages across the country as a result of the fallout.

Authorities have reported damage to electrical infrastructure in Lviv and (west) and Dnipropetrovsk. According to the capital’s mayor, Vitali Klichkó, the attack also caused power and water outages in some parts of Kiev.

Energy Minister Herman Galushchenko described this “difficult” situation of the electrical system after the attack, and companies in the sector have announced emergency shutdowns due to the damage the system has sustained.

Today marks the ninth massive Russian attack on Ukraine’s electrical system since March 22. Ukraine has lost much of its generating capacity as a result of these attacks, and is working around the clock to repair and replace damaged infrastructure and equipment before the cold snap hits.

While, the Minister of Foreign AffairsDmitro Kuleba, has asked Western partners from Kiev which allow the country to use its long-range weapons to attack targets on Russian territory and thus avoid massive attacks like the one this morning.

He has also urged allies to use their own air defenses to shoot down Russian drones and missiles that reach areas near Ukraine’s western border.

In this sense, Polish military aircraft, with the cooperation of the Allies, patrol the border area, near Lviv, with the aim of “securing Poland’s airspace”.
